Comment compter les syllabes
en français

French syllabification differs from English in important ways — especially for poetry.

E muet (mute e)

Final 'e' at the end of a word is silent in spoken French — but counts as a syllable in classical poetry. Toggle "poetry mode" to include it.

belle = 1 spoken / 2 poetic
Élision

When a word ending in 'e' is followed by a vowel, the 'e' is dropped. "Je aime" → "j'aime". The apostrophe marks the dropped syllable.

l'amour = 2 syllabes
Liaison

Silent consonants at the end of words are pronounced before a following vowel. "Les enfants" — the 's' links. Does not create a new syllable.

les enfants = 3 syllabes
Hiatus

When two vowels meet inside a word and each forms its own syllable. "Lion" = li-on (2 syllables). Unlike English, French hiatus usually keeps each vowel separate.

poème = 3 syllabes
Alexandrine

The most important meter in French classical poetry — exactly 12 syllables, split 6+6 at a caesura. Used by Racine, Hugo, Molière. This tool flags alexandrines automatically.

12 syllabes = alexandrin ✓
Diphtongues

French vowel combinations like 'oi', 'ou', 'eu', 'ai' are usually one syllable. "Roi" = 1 syllable. "Nuit" = 1 syllable. Unlike Spanish, French rarely separates these.

roi = 1 syllabe
Victor Hugo — "Demain, dès l'aube" (alexandrins)
"Demain, dès l'aube, à l'heure où blanchit la campagne," 12 ✓
"Je partirai. Vois-tu, je sais que tu m'attends." 12 ✓
"J'irai par la forêt, j'irai par la montagne." 12 ✓

Quick answers about French syllable counting and this tool.

In spoken French, count vowel sounds — each one makes a syllable. The mute 'e' at the end of words is not counted. In classical poetry, the mute 'e' is counted unless followed by a vowel. Toggle "poetry mode" in this tool to switch between the two counts.
An alexandrine is a line of exactly 12 syllables — the most important poetic meter in classical French literature. It is divided into two halves of 6 syllables each by a caesura (pause). Victor Hugo, Racine, and Molière used it extensively.
E muet (mute e) is the letter 'e' at the end of words that is not pronounced in everyday speech — "belle" sounds like 1 syllable, "table" like 1 syllable. In classical poetry, the mute e counts as a syllable unless the next word begins with a vowel. Enable poetry mode to count it.
Yes. The syllable counting rules are the same for standard French (France) and Québécois French (Canada). Vocabulary and pronunciation differ, but syllabification follows the same patterns. Paste any French text from any region.
Absolutely. Paste your French lyrics and instantly see syllable counts per line. Keep poetry mode OFF for modern songs (spoken French rules) and ON for chanson française poetry (Brel, Brassens) where the mute e is often sung.
